  1. Project description

We are Hive women, a team from Madagascar and located in Ambovombe-Centre Manandriana, a remote District of the country; where girls and women lack regular access to safe menstrual materials and facilities. Therefore our project aims to provide a solution for better menstrual hygiene management for the girls and women in Manandriana. The project is titled \"PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION OF REUSABLE SANITARY PADS BY HIVE CENTER FOR HER\"; and its activity contains three parts as follow:

  • Production and distribution of pads by Hive team
  • Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) information sharing at Hive Center
  • Menstrual facilities construction and showcases at Hive Center.

2. Project progress up to now

  • Production and distribution of reusable sanitary pads:

We spend the month of May and June 2022 to analyze, and then choose the right pad\'s pattern and fabrics suitable for the girls and women in Manandriana. We consider the full process from the use of the pad and its cleaning condition to come up with the final product. The production process started this July 2022 after the sewing machines and fabrics\' purchase. During the project period all expenses will be paid with Korea She Foundation\'s grant; but our long-term objective is to convert this pads\' production & distribution into a self-supporting activity within Hive Center.

  • Menstrual Hygiene Management information sharing (MHM):

Hive center is the venue for the MHM information sharing for Girls and women of Manandriana. The information is simple and easy to understand, as some of the targets might be illiterate. The sharing method will be adapted on the time availability and the study level of the participants.

Time availability Number of visitor Sharing method
Less than 10mn 1 person One to one spontaneous conversation
Less than 10mn More than 1 person Speech style
10 to 30mn 1 person Discussion
10 to 30mn More that 1 person Focus group

We started preparing this program in May, the start of 2022 GSG, and we ended the preparation this month of July with the MHM information sharing canvas. Our team is now ready to welcome girls and women of Manandriana to benefit from this program.

  • Menstrual facilities construction and showcase:

UNICEF defines menstrual facilities as \"facilities most associated with a safe and dignified menstruation, such as toilets and water infrastructure\". Because of the budget limitation, such facilities do not exist yet at Hive Center. Unfortunately it is also the case for all the public institutions in Manandriana. Consequently, it is imperative to build water infrastructure within Hive Center. Also, a showcase is organized as an opportunity for the decision maker in Manandriana to define as a priority the construction of menstrual facilities for public institutions. Below is the illustration of menstrual facilities suggested by UNICEF, which is the model Hive center wants to copy. \"\" Hive center menstrual facilities construction started on July 4th, 2020 after a challenging material supply because of the price rise. However the work is going on well and it will be ready to use in August. 3. Project plan forward For the remaining 3months of the project period, we will run the project as follow:

  • August 2022: Finishing the production of reusable sanitary pad and completing the menstrual facilities construction
  • September and October 2022: distribution of reusable sanitary pad, MHM information sharing, and menstrual facilities showcase.
