  1. Project Description The waste management of Nepal is very poor as the minimization and segregation of waste are not practiced properly by people. Moreover, due to a lack of material recovery facilities, all the waste (household, school, hotel, hospital, office) of the whole Kathmandu valley is dumped at the Sisdol Landfill Site (SLS), Nuwakot. The waste pickers of that area who belongs to the low-income generating group depend upon scavenging the waste of SLS for their livelihood.  Different studies show that waste workers are not interested in using PPE due to a lack of knowledge and uneasiness. However, they suffer from various occupational hazards such as cuts, injuries, and other dangerous diseases led by those cuts. Therefore, with this project, we, Kalpavaatika Society Nepal, plan to decrease their risk of exposure to hazards by providing safety boots suitable for working in SLS. Our aim is to educate them about the use of PPE by first making them understand its importance of it. Secondly, we will provide the safety boots to 50 waste pickers/workers of SLS which will be easy to use in daily life and provide a sense of occupational health and safety. In this regard, we will conduct 2 educational sessions for 50 waste pickers. a. Pre-educational session: where we will educate them about occupational health and safety, the importance of safety boots, and interaction with them about their situation. b. Post-educational session: which is more like monitoring and evaluation of the project. Feedback and recommendations from waste workers after the use of safety boots will be collected.
  2. Project progress up to now Kalpavaatika Society Nepal team is halfway through this project. On 17 May 2022, Ms. Deepa Lama, Project Lead, and Ms. Roma Shrestha, Logistic Officer had a preliminary site and municipality office visit. We had a brief scan of SLS, its situation, and the number of workers presents there. We had a conversation with one of the field supervisors regarding the project we are doing. We were provided with the information that there is a total of 471 waste workers and most of them don\'t use any safety equipment\'s while working. Similarly, a meeting was held with the ward officer of Kakani Municipality to discuss the project and approval. As suggested by the field supervisor and our field observation, we decided to distribute safety boots to 50 women waste pickers. \"\" \"\" \"\" We were unable to conduct any activities in June month due to a local level election and bad road conditions caused by heavy rainfall in the Kakani area. Because of this, we were not up to our work plan schedule. But we utilized this time by researching different safety boots and exploring markets, contents for educational sessions, and preparing a questionnaire survey to know the health status of waste workers. During this time, as the SLS has been used as an open dumping site for 18 years, the government decided to change the location of the landfill site to Banchare dada from Sisdol due to agitation showed by local people as it has been there for 18 years as an open dumping site. Finally, on 5 July 2022 we along with some volunteers conducted a pre-educational session at the newly opened Banchare landfill site (BLS). The first activity included education sharing and interaction with waste workers on occupational hazards, health, and safety facilitated by Ms. Deepa Lama and one of our volunteers Mr. Samir Thapa. Then we had a quick discussion about their preference for safety boots while working. At last, we conducted a questionnaire survey to know the health status and working history of 50 women waste workers.
  3. Project Plan Forward After the interaction session with waste workers and evaluating the questionnaire survey, we have decided to distribute 2 pairs of safety boots per person i.e. 1 suitable for the summer season and 1 for the winter season. We have planned to distribute safety boots on the 28th of July, 2022 if road condition remains in our favor. And we will conduct a post-educational session after one month of safety boot distribution i.e. probably at the end of August. As this phase of the project is only covering 10% of total waste workers, we are planning to include the remaining waste workers (men too) in our next phase. Beside that, we are hoping to distribute other safety materials too such as sunglasses, safety gloves (not rubber), etc. in the future. We are also thinking of providing educational (Stationary) materials to children of waste workers who are in need and menstrual hygiene and sanitation program to women/girl waste workers in the future. \"\" \"\" \"\" \"\" \"\" \"\" \"\"
